The Open Book Closed: The Final Chapter of Virat Kohli’s Test Journey

The golden feathers on the white jersey have finally come to rest. Virat Kohli, who rose as a titan of Indian cricket, has bid farewell to his Test career. Just a little more distance remained to complete the grand narrative—he was merely 770 runs away from the singular milestone of 10,000 Test runs when he chose to step aside.

An exceptional leader who carried the weight of expectations placed upon him after Sachin Tendulkar, Kohli wasn’t just another batsman; he was an icon of athletic prowess, mental resilience, and inspirational leadership. Taking over the reins of Test captaincy after Dhoni, he redefined the role—not as a ceremonial title, but as a position of real, victorious meaning.

Beginning his Test chapter in 2011 in the West Indies, his journey spanned from Ahmedabad and Port of Spain to Perth and ultimately Sydney—each a landmark in a remarkable story. For a player like Kohli, who always chased victory with unrelenting passion, even defeats became lessons, fueling stronger comebacks.

After a dismal performance in England in 2014, he returned in 2018 with a thundering 583 runs on the same soil. From 2016 to 2018, he was a near-unstoppable force, scoring centuries almost every Test. His highest score, an unbeaten 254, came against South Africa, who then had one of the world’s best bowling attacks.

Under his captaincy, India won 40 out of 68 Tests—a formidable record in the modern game. He earned his place among legends like Graeme Smith, Ricky Ponting, and Steve Waugh.

His final challenge came in early 2025 in Sydney against Australia. Though he didn’t score many runs, he left behind a powerful imprint—the essence of pure dedication.

Virat Kohli’s Test journey has concluded. But the book he began writing in India’s cricket history contains more pages than anyone else has ever written. More than just a batsman, Kohli made Test cricket an attitude—a way of life.

Now, only the echoes of valor will remain…
