Sabari Rail Project Revived: A New Dawn for Central Kerala

Kerala’s long-cherished dream — the Angamaly-Sabari Railway Line — is finally showing signs of becoming a reality. In a crucial meeting in New Delhi between Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the long-stalled project received fresh impetus. A railway expert team is expected to arrive in the state within days to initiate the land acquisition process, with remaining acquisitions set to begin by July.

Importance of the Project

The 111-kilometre line, which had seen only 7 kilometres of track and a bridge constructed before stalling, will now resume progress — bringing relief to thousands in Ernakulam, Idukki, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta districts. Most significantly, the uncertainty faced by hundreds of families affected by land acquisition is finally nearing resolution.

A Pathway to Regional Development

While the current alignment plans to connect Angamaly to Erumeli, the state has proposed an extension via Punalur to the Vizhinjam port. This would not only unlock the full potential of the Vizhinjam international seaport but also drive comprehensive development across Central Kerala. The railway corridor could facilitate the emergence of logistics hubs and support economic, commercial, agricultural, and trade sectors along its route. The government has also initiated steps to acquire 10,000 acres of private land for port-related industries.

Boost for Tourism and Industry

The Sabari railway line is poised to benefit several local industries — including sawmills and rice mills in Perumbavoor and Kalady, the pineapple industry in Vazhakulam, and the Spices Park in Thodupuzha. It will also improve access to popular tourist destinations such as Munnar, Bhoothathankettu, Ilaveezhapoonchira, Vagamon, Kuttikkanam, and Thekkady. Notably, the proposed Sabarimala airport is just 8 kilometres from Erumeli, enhancing the rail line’s strategic importance.

A Solution for Vizhinjam Cargo Traffic

Once cargo movement from Vizhinjam port begins in full swing, severe congestion on the existing MC Road is anticipated. The proposed Thiruvananthapuram-Angamaly greenfield highway is also unlikely to handle the load effectively. An extended Sabari line to Vizhinjam would allow for a dedicated freight corridor. Under the central government's "Rail Sagarmala" initiative, rail links to ports will not impose financial burdens on the state — a major advantage for Kerala.

Project Economics

The estimated cost of constructing the Sabari railway is ₹3,801 crore, with ₹1,900 crore to be borne by the state government. Extending the line to Vizhinjam is projected to cost an additional ₹4,800 crore. “We can develop the Sabari line into a project connecting Vizhinjam in the future,” said CM Pinarayi Vijayan, signalling long-term vision for the corridor.

The state has also demanded that the 2019 order from Indian Railways freezing the project be withdrawn and that the required 392 hectares of land be made available without further delay. While all land acquisition in Idukki and two villages in Kottayam is complete, in Ernakulam, social impact assessment is yet to be finalized for marked sites. Overall, 24 hectares of land must be acquired and 14 stations are proposed along the route.

This renewed momentum marks a significant breakthrough — bringing a transformative infrastructure project back to life and reigniting hopes for Central Kerala’s economic and social advancement.
