Rotten Food and Filth: Cleanliness Must Be a Right for Train Passengers

The perception of a nuhhation on the move is shifting. What should symbolize the vast reach and reliability of Indian Railways—carrying millions of passengers every day—is instead marred by filth and food-related disgrace. The recent seizure in Kochi of stale food items intended for distribution on the Vande Bharat train has once again raised questions about passenger safety and systemic accountability.

The seized items—including boiled eggs and spoiled chicken—were found at a catering center on Fatima Road in Kochi. What shocked many was the revelation that this food was meant for the prestigious Vande Bharat service. The establishment in question was operating without even a proper license, and it was later discovered to be part of a 60-year-old Brindavan Cluster Kitchen chain. This points yet again to a serious lapse in responsibility.

This was not the first time this particular establishment faced penalties and protests. Back in November 2024, a fine was imposed after a dead creature was found in the sambar served on a Vande Bharat train. In light of the current incident, several MPs have demanded the cancellation of the contract and stern punitive action.

“Journeys like Hell”

The situation in general coaches—on which the common man depends—is extremely deplorable. Filthy toilets, strewn beedis, spittle, and cockroaches present a disturbing sight. Irregular cleaning schedules, invisible contract workers, and recurring food complaints all point to a complete failure in maintaining hygiene.

Railway stations fare no better. Stray dogs, foul smells, and unsanitary conditions prevail. It is the indifference of contractors and authorities alike that has led to such a sorry state of affairs in railway cleanliness.

“Collective Responsibility is Essential”

Times have changed. Most passengers now travel with valid tickets, with many in higher classes paying fares equivalent to air travel. Yet what they receive in return is bad food and discomfort.

This is unacceptable. Everyone—from railway workers’ unions to passengers themselves—must come together to ensure cleanliness, not just as a duty but as a shared right to a dignified travel experience.

Action is needed. Cleanliness in trains must now be recognized as a fundamental right.
