Rift in UDF over Anwar: Congress and League Face-Off in Nilambur

The issue of P.V. Anwar's candidature in Nilambur has sparked a severe rift within the United Democratic Front (UDF). While the Congress party has firmly stated that the door is closed for Anwar, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is still attempting to find a compromise before the deadline to withdraw nomination papers. There is growing concern that this internal conflict could severely impact the UDF’s chances in the Nilambur by-election.

League’s Fluctuating Stand:

The remarks by IUML Malappuram district general secretary and MLA P. Abdul Hameed have added to the confusion. Speaking to the media in the morning, he stated that even though Anwar had submitted his nomination, there was still a possibility of withdrawal and urged UDF leaders to take the initiative accordingly. His statement was interpreted as one made with the tacit approval of the party’s state leadership. Hameed said, “IUML national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty has spent considerable time and effort on resolving the Anwar issue. Even our state president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, currently on Hajj, has tried to mediate.”

However, following strong pressure from the Congress, Abdul Hameed revised his stance by evening, stating that all doors for Anwar had now been closed, and questioned what could be done if Anwar was unwilling to cooperate with reconciliation efforts. This apparent flip-flop by the League has further irritated Congress leaders.

Criticism Within the League Against Congress:

During a recent IUML leadership meeting, the crisis within the UDF was hotly debated. There was sharp criticism against Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan. IUML leaders accused the Congress of unnecessary stubbornness, which they claimed led to the current impasse. They pointed out that the situation, which could have easily been a winning one, had now become complicated due to Congress' intransigence. The meeting reminded the Congress that a win in Nilambur was not just a League priority but crucial for the entire front. The IUML leadership still holds a sliver of hope that Anwar might withdraw his nomination at the last minute.

Political Equation in Nilambur:

The Nilambur by-election is a matter of prestige for the UDF. However, Anwar’s candidature has made the battle more complex. Having served as Nilambur MLA for over eight years, Anwar is known for his shrewd vote-splitting tactics — something the CPI(M) is well aware of. His influence was also critical in establishing Left control over Nilambur Municipality and three panchayats. The CPI(M) seems to be evaluating whether a strong party candidate could counter Anwar’s strategies.

On the other hand, UDF’s primary concern is that Anwar’s candidature might split their vote share. BJP’s candidate, Mohan George, a council member of the Marthoma Church, is expected to draw a segment of minority votes — a prospect that could deal a major blow to the UDF.

P.V. Anwar’s Asset Declaration:

P.V. Anwar has filed his nomination as the Trinamool Congress candidate for the Nilambur by-election. After a roadshow, he submitted his nomination to Sub-Collector M.P. Sindhu at the Nilambur Taluk Office, accompanied by TMC leader E.A. Suku, auto driver Salahuddin, farmer Saji, and street vendor Shabeer.

According to the affidavit filed with his nomination, Anwar owns assets worth ₹52.21 crore. His two wives collectively own assets worth ₹10.13 crore, including 1,400 grams of gold jewelry valued at ₹2.13 crore. The affidavit states Anwar himself possesses no gold, silver, or other valuable items. He has ₹25,000 in cash, while each wife holds ₹10,000. His total liabilities amount to ₹20.60 crore. He has ₹2.07 lakh deposited in banks, while his wives have ₹19,091. Anwar owns a 2016 model Toyota Innova. Earlier, he had made headlines by claiming he lacked the financial means to contest elections.

In this context, how the UDF leadership resolves the Nilambur crisis remains to be seen. Whether they will seek reconciliation with Anwar or maintain a firm stance will be a decisive factor influencing the election outcome in Nilambur.
