The mega film Empuraan, starring Mohanlal in the lead role, is undergoing re-censorship. Following widespread controversies post its release, the filmmakers have decided to make changes to certain parts of the movie. Reports indicate that 17 scenes have been re-edited in the new version, and some dialogues have been muted. The name of the villain character will also be changed.

The issue gained traction after the prominent nationalist organization RSS alleged that the film carried an anti-Hindu agenda. The organization’s mouthpiece, Organiser, published strong criticisms, prompting the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to seek a report from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. Subsequently, Union Minister Anurag Thakur asked the Censor Board for an explanation.

Upon indications that the Censor Board might recall the film, the producers themselves moved ahead with necessary changes. The revisions focus primarily on riot scenes and acts of violence against women. The name of the villain character played by Abhimanyu Singh — ‘Baba Bajrangi’ — will be changed. With no other options left, Mohanlal, director Prithviraj, and the producers held discussions to resolve the issue. The final decision was shaped through the intervention of producer Suresh Kumar, who has good connections at the centre.

The producers announced that the censored new version would reach theatres by Wednesday or Thursday. Until then, the current version will continue to be screened.

Amidst the controversies, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s visit to watch Empuraan with his family also drew attention. The screening took place at Lulu Mall theatre in Thiruvananthapuram.

Whether the new version of Empuraan will leave audiences with deeper thoughts than the original is something only time will tell.
