Thiruvananthapuram: The bright young students of Oxford School have shown Malayalis the valuable lesson that great changes always begin with small steps. On June 5, World Environment Day, visitors to Kovalam beach witnessed a heartening sight: around one hundred students of Classes VII and VIII, leaving aside their school bags, wearing gloves, and stepping forward to clean the seashore. Though it may appear to be a small act, the environmental message they conveyed to society was truly significant.

Every action of the students reflected the school’s annual theme for this year: “Civic Sense and Life Skills.” Instead of limiting the day to a mere ceremonial observance, the students picked up plastic waste and other discarded materials one by one, making Kovalam Beach cleaner and more beautiful. They also took time to speak to people on the beach about the importance of environmental protection and responsible civic consciousness.

With the active support of teachers, the Head of Section, the school marketing team, and the Physical Education Department, the enthusiasm of the students doubled. For the children, this became a meaningful experience beyond classroom learning, giving them an opportunity to step directly into society, understand real-life issues, and work together.

Through these young achievers, Oxford School has once again proved that it is not merely nurturing bookworms, but responsible citizens who will provide shade and support to tomorrow’s society. This cleanliness drive became one of the most beautiful sights witnessed by the capital city on Environment Day.
