Is the Congress Wasting a Global Asset? The Marginalisation of Shashi Tharoor

The standing of Dr. Shashi Tharoor — former UN Under-Secretary-General, celebrated author, and sitting Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram — within the Indian National Congress is once again under scrutiny. Political observers increasingly note a pattern of subtle sidelining within the party, raising an uncomfortable question: is the Congress failing to fully harness the potential of one of its most globally recognised leaders?

Recent developments point to deliberate marginalisation: omission from key party committees, exclusion from major policy discussions, and a conspicuous downplaying of his ideas and contributions. In a party striving to rebuild its relevance nationally, the under-utilisation of a figure like Tharoor seems perplexing, if not counterproductive.

The “Outsider” Perception:

Tharoor’s entry into the Congress was anything but conventional. Unlike many party veterans who rose through the ranks of the Youth Congress or NSUI, his path was forged through an illustrious diplomatic career at the United Nations. This global exposure endowed him with independent thinking and a broad worldview — traits that do not always align comfortably with the party’s more traditional organisational culture. As a result, Tharoor has often been perceived, within Congress circles, as something of an outsider.

The Shadow of Leadership Anxiety:

Another factor frequently cited is concern over Tharoor’s growing popularity — both within India and among the global Indian diaspora. Media-savvy, articulate, and commanding wide respect, Tharoor is one of the few Congress leaders who can match the BJP’s narrative skills on the national stage. For those closely aligned with the Gandhi family, particularly within Rahul Gandhi’s circle, there appears to be latent anxiety: could Tharoor eventually emerge as an alternative power centre? This undercurrent, while rarely articulated openly, has allegedly contributed to efforts to curtail his influence.

Internal Jealousies and Factionalism:

Factional rivalries and professional jealousies within the party further complicate Tharoor’s position. Many long-serving Congress leaders have struggled to reconcile with his rapid rise and international stature. His widespread appeal — both in traditional media and across social platforms — has inadvertently fuelled resentment among peers less able to command such attention. The recent ambivalence displayed by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee towards elevating Tharoor’s profile within the state is a telling example of this dynamic.

Principled Stance Against Hindutva:

Tharoor’s unequivocal opposition to the BJP’s Hindutva politics and his steadfast commitment to secular, constitutional values should, under ideal circumstances, have made him a natural national face for the Congress. Ironically, these very stances have at times worked to his disadvantage, especially in contexts where Congress units are tempted to adopt soft-Hindutva tactics for short-term electoral gain. Tharoor’s refusal to dilute his principles in pursuit of political expediency sets him apart — and not always to his advantage within his own party.

A Wasted Opportunity?

In any truly meritocratic party, a leader of Tharoor’s calibre would be placed front and centre. India’s democratic discourse today is in dire need of voices that combine intellectual rigour with global perspective — precisely the qualities Tharoor brings to the table. That the Congress remains hesitant, or unable, to fully leverage his strengths reflects deeper systemic weaknesses: a culture of suspicion toward independent thinking, a resistance to change, and an unwillingness to share space at the top.Whether driven by envy, insecurity, or tactical miscalculation, the Congress risks squandering one of its finest assets at a time when it can ill afford to do so. The party’s internal debate increasingly revolves around a single, stark question: is it sidelining Shashi Tharoor to its own peril?
