Fire Incidents Continue Unabated: Kozhikodes Wait for Safety

Fire accidents have become a recurring issue in Kozhikode city. In just the first five months of this year, there have already been four major fires. Even before the mysteries surrounding last week's fire at the Medical College were resolved, a massive blaze broke out on Sunday at the Mofussil Bus Stand in the city centre. The result: losses worth crores, hours-long rescue operations, and growing anxiety among residents—this is now the reality of the city.

Many buildings in the city, including the bus stand, lack fire safety systems. Despite notices issued by the fire force four years ago, no action has been taken. Some buildings have been operating for ten years without a No Objection Certificate (NOC). Even the old fire station remains under renovation, and there is no ready fire unit within the city limits. When the recent accident occurred, water ran out at the nearest unit within three minutes, forcing other units to respond.

Even new buildings do not comply with safety standards. Commercial complexes and offices in areas like Mittai Theruvu and Valiyangadi constantly face the threat of fire. Over the past 12 years, about 35 fire incidents have occurred in the city. In the 2007 Mittai Theruvu fire, six people died and 50 shops were destroyed.

A well-equipped fire station and strict fire safety regulations are essential for the city. Each fire is a major lesson—but neither the city nor the authorities seem to be learning from them.

"With fires continuing and safety lacking, Kozhikode and its people remain in a constant state of anxious anticipation."
