Class one admission Now at Age Six: A Thoughtful Start to childhood

Six years old,
It might sound like just another age. But it’s also a crucial number in terms of a child’s development—an age that can shape the future of their education. From now on, this is the age at which children in Kerala will officially begin their formal schooling journey.

A Deep Reform in Education

Starting from the academic year 2026–27, the minimum age for admission to Class 1 in Kerala schools has been revised to six years. This decision was announced by the Education Minister, V. Sivankutty.

Until now, the admission age was five. However, most children already entering Class 1 are six years old or close to it. The government is now officially recognizing and standardizing this age across the board.

Backed by Science and Law.

Multiple scientific studies confirm that a child’s cognitive and emotional development matures better after the age of six. Supporting this evidence are the Right to Education Act of 2009 and the National Education Policy of 2020, both of which mandate that children should begin Class 1 only after turning six.

In Kerala, central institutions like Kendriya Vidyalayas have already been following this guideline. It will also become mandatory for CBSE schools in the state.

Pre-schooling — Now Aiming for Higher Quality

Education expert Dr. Achyuth Sankar puts it this way:

> “Pre-school education must be high-quality and engaging. It’s the first place where children begin to interact with the world. No child should ever enter school unprepared, even if it means waiting a little longer.”

This change calls for pre-schools to evolve into more thoughtful spaces that nurture age-appropriate development in children.

Admission Tests and Fee Demands Are Illegal.

Some private schools still conduct entrance exams and demand capitation fees for Class 1 admission. As per the Right to Education Act of 2009, such practices are punishable by law. The Education Minister has warned that complaints regarding such actions will be addressed with firm action.

A Small Change, A Big Impact

This is not just a change in age criteria. It is a critical milestone that sparks curiosity and excitement in children just before they begin their educational journey.

Let learning be a joy, not a burden.

Everyone should begin learning at their own time—not before it. So, when a child utters their first syllables at age six, it will be a deeply intentional moment—a heartfelt first step into the world of knowledge.
