Amid Opposition from INDIA Alliance, Wakf Amendment Bill Passed in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha has passed the controversial and politically sensitive Wakf Amendment Bill, overcoming stiff resistance from the parties in the 'INDIA' alliance. Despite strong opposition and protests, the BJP-led central government stood firm on the bill. When Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced the bill, it sparked intense debates in the house.

After the opposition’s amendments were rejected through a vote, Union Home Minister Amit Shah gave a forceful explanation of the bill's necessity and relevance. He pointed to attempts being made to declare places like the Tiruchendurai temple land in Tamil Nadu as Wakf property.

Christian organizations also came out in support of the bill. Amit Shah specifically cited the backing of groups such as the KCBC (Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council), Catholic Bishops’ Council, and Catholic Congress in the Lok Sabha. Given the background of Christian land ownership being questioned in areas like Munambam, their support is considered crucial.

However, since the bill deals with religious matters, Amit Shah clarified that non-Muslim members should not interfere. The bill strictly prohibits non-Muslim members from being part of Wakf Councils or State Boards.

Congress leader K.C. Venugopal and Muslim League’s E.T. Mohammed Basheer argued that the bill was anti-minority and warned that Christian, Jain, and Sikh communities might face similar situations in the future.

There is mounting opposition in both political and religious spheres over the bill. Political attention is now turning to the social, legal, and communal consequences of this amendment across the country.
