New Path, Old Dream: The SilverLine Awakens Again

After a period of silence, during which the SilverLine project was confined to the memories of many due to widespread public opposition, the discussion is returning—though not on the same old track. This return is shaped by new approaches and clearly redefined goals. The state government now aims to realize a broad-gauge semi-high-speed rail corridor through political consensus and technical restructuring — and for this, Kerala is once again placing its trust in the hands of ‘Metro Man’ E. Sreedharan.

The new plan, covering the stretch from Thiruvananthapuram to Kannur, proposes a speed of 200 kilometers per hour and stations every 30 kilometers. To minimize land acquisition, much of the route will pass over pillars and through tunnels. The current position of Indian Railways is in favor of converting the line to broad gauge, as standard gauge does not support high-speed goods trains — a factor that continues to raise concerns.

Although the plan submitted by E. Sreedharan to the government is just over two pages long, the scope of hope it carries is far greater. The government is optimistic that Sreedharan’s close relationship with Prime Minister Modi will help secure project approval. Efforts are underway to arrange a meeting with the Railway Minister under the leadership of Delhi representative K.V. Thomas.

Former Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had earlier stated that the SilverLine remains under the ministry’s consideration — a statement that breathes new life into the project. Sreedharan has recommended that construction responsibilities be assigned to DMRC, and there is also consideration of involving K-Rail Corporation through a subcontract, ensuring their continued participation.

As other high-speed corridors across the country — like Delhi-Meerut, Mumbai-Ahmedabad, and Delhi-Alwar — make steady progress, the Kerala government is determined not to be left behind. The new SilverLine is not just a revival of an old project; it is a renewed narrative combining political will and technological direction.

Now, the final decision is awaited. But this time, there is more solid hope than doubt — even if the path has changed, the goal remains the same: a developed Kerala through high-speed rail.
